Symposium for Glass Design and Glass Architecture in Zwiesel
08. October 2018
Nuremberg – At the invitation of Netzwerk Glas, Glasfachschule Zwiesel and bayern design, center for design competence, experts from the fields of design and architecture and the glass industry will come together at the new Symposium for Glass Design and Glass Architecture. Creative product design, innovative technology and state-of-the-art production processes have facilitated the success of the German glass industry in the global market. The goal of the network meeting which will take place at Glasfachschule Zwiesel is to provide further inspiration: Contemporary glass design – from craftsmanship in production and trends in industrial product design to the latest developments in glass architecture – will be on display on October 12 and 13, 2018.
On October 12, seven speakers will introduce glass as a raw material. The topics of the lectures will include industrial design, product design, glass as an object of art, the use of glass in architecture, the historical use of the material, and the contemporary relevance of glass and brands to illustrate the multiple options for processing and expression provided by this outstanding material. On October 13, participants will be offered a tour of Zwiesel Kristallglas AG’s plant and a peek at manual glass production at Glasfachschule Zwiesel.
Glass – design, architecture and form. Focus on three contributions.
The work of internationally renowned product designer Sebastian Herkner (studio Sebastian Herkner, Offenbach am Main) bears special mention. He will present his furniture, lamps, porcelain and other glass objects in his lecture titled Handle with Care. Glass Design. Herkner had his breakthrough as a designer in 2012 with the Bell Table, a coffee table developed for the furniture brand ClassiCon for which he was honored with a Red Dot Design Award. At that time, Poschinger, a glass manufacturer in Frauenau near Zwiesel, offered ideal conditions for Sebastian Herkner to produce the sophisticated piece of glass furniture: Because the base of the table is mouth-blown, each piece is unique in its form and color and in the thickness of the material. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and design led to the creation of an exciting product that is in demand around the world and has brought Poschinger’s production capacity to the limit.
Christian Brückner of Brückner & Brückner Architekten (Tirschenreuth/Würzburg) will speak about special glass architecture. Together with his brother Peter Brückner, he has realized numerous award-winning construction projects, mostly in southern Germany. In his work, Brückner sets great store by the harmony of materials, space, location and people, which is the basis for churches, public buildings and even power plants made of glass, stone, wood and/or metal. Brückner's lecture will deal with Transparency and Translucence in architecture. One particularly successful example is his renovation and extension of a former community brewery to create the Bavarian-Bohemian Meeting Center in Schönsee. Brückner elaborately renovated the dilapidated brewery on the Bavarian-Czech border between Hof and Passau, and it now fits into the landscape perfectly. The thick old stone walls on the upper floor were partially interrupted by broad glass walls. The roof is made mostly of glass shingles. The selection of the materials processed for this piece of contemporary architecture – boulders, glass, iron and wood – was determined by the site of the historical building on the former Glass Road.
Boris Kochan of KOCHAN & PARTNER GmbH (a CD/CI agency operating offices in Berlin and Munich) is a designer, entrepreneur, journalist, author and consultant with a comprehensive perspective on the subject of branding. In his lecture titled Brand and Personality, Form and Function, Kochan will discuss the impact of forms on taste. A wine tasting including an analysis of the shape of wine glasses will conclude the first day of the event.
Organized by bayern design, Netzwerk Glas and Glasfachschule Zwiesel, the new Symposium for Glass Design and Glass Architecture will be held every two years to provide designers, architects, artists and artisans with impetus for their work and help creative people network with companies.
