New on the market
The book Designleistungen bewerten und kalkulieren (Evaluating and Calculating Design Services) by Joachim Kobuss and Alexander Bretz describes a rational approach to handling design services. The authors provide orientation regarding the key issues of self- and third-party evaluation in the design sector – from perspectives which are not necessarily axiomatic for the industry. Readers benefit from a thorough analysis of design services that covers pertinent issues such as self-worth, the value of performance, benefit and calculation.
Instead of formulas and numbers, the book focuses on the conceptual and strategic aspects of evaluations and calculations, that is, more on mentifacts and sociofacts, less on artefacts. Kobuss and Bretz conducted thematic interviews with experts and professionals in diverse segments of design and disciplines relevant to design including Erik Spiekermann and Stefan Sagmeister. Their exhaustive list of recommended literature and indices of persons and subjects enhance the read and provide additional orientation.
For the third edition, the manual Designbusiness gründen und entwickeln (Starting and Developing a Design Business) has been revised completely and extended to provide orientation for relevant topics of professional practice and starting and developing companies in the design sector. The manual provides an in-depth analysis of the professional and entrepreneurial scope of design, from the founder’s identity as a self-employed entrepreneur and models and plans to conditions and opportunities. Rather than giving generic advice and tips, the book focuses on personal qualifications and recommended actions taking into consideration subjective and objective aspects – mentifacts, sociofacts and artefacts.
