Design drives innovation
5 September 2017Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH, Gottlieb-Keim-Str. 60, 95448 Bayreuth, Wolfsbach
Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH and Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) of Bayreuth will host the Presentation of the Month of September 2017 titled Design as a Driver of Innovation & New Materials in the Context of the Smart Economy. Speakers will include Dr. Silke Claus, Managing Director of bayern design GmbH, and Pierre Delforno of designaffairs GmbH.
The first element of the presentation will deal with the dovetailing of design competence and materials expertise that builds the foundation for key product innovations: High-quality design has become a standard feature of most modern consumer goods, capital goods, and services. Details ensure the cutting edge in the market for products. New technologies and materials need to be incorporated in the product development process from the onset.
In the second part of the presentation, the audience will learn about the growing demands and opportunities materials development offers for design, sustainability and product innovation: Materials transform from hard, rigid and static substances to interactive, reactive and adaptive media. At the same time, the design context switches from technic competition, business-to-consumer development, linear economy, etc. to open-source innovation, the makers’ society, circular economy, etc.
Dr. Silke Claus studied architecture and psychology at TU Braunschweig, Leibniz Universität Hannover, TU Berlin and the University of Austin in Texas. From 1994 to 2004, she worked as a lecturer at Universität Hannover and TU Dresden and as the deputy managing director of the agency MACINA Hannover/Dubai before she assumed the position of managing director of Internationales Designzentrum Berlin in 2005. In 2009, Claus became managing director of bayern design GmbH where she is responsible for coordinating and structuring the promotion of design in Bavaria on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs.
Pierre Delforno studied engineering at ESTACA Campus Paris-Saclay and at Strate School of Design Paris. He holds a master’s degree in industrial design and innovation management (2011). During his studies, Delforno worked in prototype production and acoustic measuring at BMW. Following an internship at the design consulting agency designaffairs GmbH, in 2011 he stayed on as a junior designer for materials technology and was promoted to the position of design engineer in 2013.
The speakers will be available to answer questions after their presentations. Admission is free. For organizational purposes, participants are requested to register by e-mail to email@example.com
